Hello Brookland Middle School Colleagues,
Welcome to your Brookland MS Library. I come to you via the DC Public Libraries, where I worked the Adult and Teen desk at the Shaw and the Tenleytown branch in NW DC. For the past 15 years I’ve been living in Bloomingdale, a Ward 5 neighborhood of DC located a short 15 minute bike ride from school.
A few things I wanted to share with you are…
- The librarian does not owns the library. You and your students do. You can recommend materials and have a voice in anything that has to do with the library media center. Feel free to share!
- The Media Center provides books and so much more. I want to remind you that besides books, the media center holds plenty of databases that support your classroom themes, technology tools and equipment to enhance both your and your students skills and a wonderful meeting space (for those days in which you may need a change of setting).
- Planning is a good thing. I will do my best to get what you need as quickly as I can, but the more time you give me the better.
- You can check out resources even when I am not here. Near the circulation desk is a clipboard labeled Staff Checkout. Fill in your last name, date, title of the book and the barcode number located on the back of the book. This way you can check something out even when I am not available.
- The best resource in the library is the librarian. I want to help you plan a project, co-teach a lesson, share new technology tools, find professional research, or answer a reference question. And if I can’t do it, I will help you find someone who can. I can also provide materials through interlibrary loan for upcoming themes or lessons or arrange special speakers.
- The library can help meet your student’s reading, information literacy and digital citizenship needs. The media center exists to help promote children’s literature, assist students develop their information literacy skills and promote digital citizenship. The media center has resources specifically targeting these themes and are ready (and itching) to use them!
I hope your year will be a positive one! Please keep in touch and let’s try new things together.
Best,
Mr. G
